A new major update to the e-book Scripting 007: Behind the writing of the James Bond movies is now online and contain:
Original English quoted text: One of the self-frustration of the previous English versions of this e-Book was that it was in fact translation from french; this is not the case of this new edition. Except for (very) few one I wasn’t able to track down: all the quotes of this edition are not translation, but the exact original English source texts (with just, when deemed necessary, spelling/orthography corrections and prose layout adaptations). This concern quotes from documents, as quote from people as well: blue, grey and in quotation marks parts of the book. In summary, a big percentage of the text of the book was changed in this new edition.
References system: having to go backward in memory lane to locate where I found the damn original quotes back in the days, a titanic endeavor by the way, I took advantage of this to now indicate the sources of the information once I tracked down them, in a new references pages at the end of the chapters. The previous authors of magazines and books about Bond from which quotes and facts were extracted now have the credits they well deserved.
Brand new Thunderball chapter: explore the genesis of Thunderball and discover how exactly this movie was conceived as a film script before becoming a novel. Who was exactly Kevin McClory and his role in it? This new take on Thunderball is fruit of a search trough thousand of pages of movie treatments/scripts, court papers (covering of the lawsuits included in the book), correspondences, the reading of two books and the viewing of three movies. Changes also happened in the Warhead / Never Say Never Again chapter. This new 150 pages chapter could have been a whole book in itself (after all, Robert Sellers published one once).
This new version also include summary tables for Thunderball and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service chapters.
New subchapters here and here covering previously unearthed script, including:
- Stirling Silliphant’s versions of The Spy Who Loved Me. The screenwriter of The Towering Inferno put 007 against new SPECTRE’s leader Janos Paterno and his twin henchmen. The story notably include a pre-anya Amasova character, Felix Leiter, 009, a supertanker and an assault against a mountain eagle’s nest.
- Daniel Petrie Jr.’s shooting script of Tomorrow Never Dies on which Raymond Benson actually based his novelization. So expect a Stamper more idiot but also more « maso », a forklifts chase and lot of different dialogue.
- Another Michael France’s GoldenEye version including a new pre-title with skis, a Russian casino sequence or an action scene in a statues graveyard.
- And some other like Dr. No 4th draft, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger shooting scripts, or other Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day drafts.
– Admiral Roebuck: They sink one of our ships and you want to have a « joint investigation »? Of all the cowardly…
– M: Disagree with me if you like, but say the word « cowardly » again and I’ll invite you outside.

– Minister of Defense: What’s this? M, it almost sounded like you were challenging Admiral Roebuck to a… To a fist fight.
– M: Yes, Minister, I certainly was.
Johanna Harwood’s inputs: since the first version of the e-book, I was able to have her read the first two chapters and interview her. Her precious additions and corrections have been included throughout Dr. No and From Russia With Love chapters of this new edition.
Some other additions or corrections throughout the whole book including for example more information on weather control in The Man with the Golden Gun, about the problems with MGM-Pathé Communications for Bond 17, things found in books I had read since, etc, or things like: did you know Stanley Price and Ronald Hardy both performed uncredited rewrites on Diamonds are Forever? Or that Sean Connery was actually a co-plaintiff in the 1976 McClory’s court case aimed to stop production of The Spy Who Loved Me? Re-read it also allowed some English spelling correction here and here (but I’m afraid that I still slaughtering your language).
Theses change doesn’t includes Daniel Craig era chapters, which remained unchanged (yet).
This new version also mark the end of the french version: doing one version is already a Herculean task; make two and ensure that things you modify here in one is also modified in the other (and I always modify things) and you’ll wish to die. So don’t look for the updated 2.0 french version of this book: there none and there will never be.
